PA Storage Building Explosion Sparks Blaze, Damages Houses

July 5, 2023
A Rapho Township, PA worker ran out of the building when he smelled gas and saw that a heater had fallen out of the ceiling.

A Rapho Township worker escaped injury Wednesday morning when a storage building exploded.

When the employee walked in, he smelled gas and saw that a heater had fallen out of the ceiling. He immediately ran, according to WGAL.

The worker did not turn on any lights when he entered the building, Rapho Township Supervisor Jere Swarr told reporters.

The building was used to house dump trucks, snow plows, backhoes and other road equipment. Damages could be millions of dollars.

Another township building -- 150 feet away -- that houses conference rooms and offices also sustained extensive damage, Swarr said.

Some nearby homes sustained damage including a house that had its front windows blown out.

Investigators are trying to determine what triggered the blast.
